Artistic Approach — Abdoul Ouattara

My work explores the face as a territory — a place where memory, culture and emotion overlap. Each portrait is born from an assemblage: fragments of landscapes, water, symbols, that come to inhabit the skin and tell a story larger than the subject itself.

I paint in oil on linen canvas, in successive layers — impasto, glazing — in a practice I deliberately let escape my initial intentions. What I seek is not resemblance, but resonance: for the face to become a landscape, and for that landscape to speak to something universal in the one who looks.

The Collections

Some works respond to one another, carried by a shared thread — a material, an obsession, a question asked several times in different forms. Rather than presenting my work as a catalog, I prefer to show it as it truly takes shape: through series, through families of works that found each other without my planning them in advance.

Creative Process — In the Studio

Each canvas begins with a fragment of an idea, rarely more. I prepare the canvas through several layers of gesso, then build the image progressively — acrylic to lay the foundations, oil to refine, until I achieve the texture I'm looking for.

The process often takes several days and hours. I never rush the essential: each piece goes through several phases of research, composition, and reworking — until that precise moment when I stand in front of the canvas and know, without quite being able to explain it, that it's finished.
